Things I wish I had known when I was looking for real estate in Mexico:

  • Not everything that looks beautiful is well-made. Make sure you can fully inspect the property you’re buying before you commit. Beware of pre-sale!

  • Contractors and workers promise things they don’t deliver, and the consumer has no recourse. If you are building a home or having work done, you should double the amount of time the contractor quotes you.

  • Buying furniture and decor can be a huge challenge in this part of Mexico. Things are expensive and often of poor quality, and there are no one-stop furniture stores. It can take months of searching to find something as simple as a sofa or a piece of art.

  • HOAs can add unexpected costs and restrictions to your home. Make sure you understand exactly what the fees and regulations are before you buy.
